Motoki Hirai is one of the most imaginative pianists of his generation. Born in Tokyo, Motoki studied piano, harmony and counterpoint with his grandfather, the eminent composer Kozaburo Hirai, and violin with his grandmother from an early age. Since his first professional appearance at the age of 13 playing his own compositions to great acclaim, he has been active both in composition and performance.
